Recognizing and Responding to Pregnancy and Postpartum Hypertension:
The Critical Role of Birth Workers and Making an Impact 

This three-series session will empower birth workers to deepen their understanding of maternal hypertension and apply their knowledge and skills to their practice. Participants will gain the confidence and skills to recognize, respond to, and support birthing people at risk of or experiencing perinatal hypertension. 

About the Facilitator: Kara Hoppe, DO, PhD, is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at UW Health and a professor in the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She specializes in high-risk pregnancies and complex maternal medical conditions and is passionate about enhancing knowledge and improving pregnancy-related care. Dr. Hoppe has no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies. 

Foundations of Perinatal Hypertension | April 16 | 10-11:30 am

Hypertension/preeclampsia contributes significantly to perinatal morbidity and mortality. This is the first of three webinars designed to meet the needs of the community birthing workforce

This webinar will provide background and describe the impact of hypertension and preeclampsia during and after pregnancy, answering such questions as: (1) How do blood pressures change during pregnancy? What should blood pressure values be? What are concerning signs of hypertension during and after pregnancy? In addition, the webinar will provide strategies and resources to support pregnant and postpartum people with hypertension/preeclampsia. 

Treatment and Management of Perinatal Hypertension | July 9 | 10-11:30 am

In session two, birth workers will learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of maternal hypertension. They will also gain a deeper understanding of current medical and lifestyle interventions used to prevent, identify, manage, and treat maternal hypertension. 

Essential Skills and Resources for Addressing Perinatal Hypertension | November 12 | 10-11:30 am

In session three, birth workers will learn how to integrate key tools and resources for maternal hypertension, including the Hypertension in Pregnancy Change Package and the Hear Her Campaign, into their practice. This session will equip birth workers to provide informed, comprehensive care to those at risk of or experiencing maternal hypertension.

The Wisconsin Association for Perinatal Care (WAPC) is accredited by the Wisconsin Medical Society to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
