Frequently Asked Questions

What is CMS Birthing Friendly Designation?

The CMS Birthing Friendly Designation (BFD) is a national hospital quality designation recognizing facilities that participate in programs focused on improving maternal health outcomes through evidence-based care and quality improvement efforts. The designation helps patients identify hospitals committed to advancing safe, equitable, and high-quality maternity care.

How does WisPQC help hospitals meet the requirements?

WisPQC provides Wisconsin hospitals with opportunities to engage in statewide quality improvement initiatives, implement patient safety bundles, participate in education and peer learning, and complete required participation and reporting activities aligned with CMS Birthing Friendly Designation measures.

What does active participation include?

Active participation may include attending live educational sessions, viewing recordings, participating in quality improvement activities, completing required surveys, engaging with WisPQC staff, and contributing to collaborative learning and implementation efforts.

What are the participation and reporting requirements?

Hospitals participating through WisPQC must achieve:

  • 75% participation in educational and collaborative activities
  • 75% on-time qualitative and quantitative reporting

WisPQC offers technical assistance and support throughout the process to help hospitals successfully meet these benchmarks.

What happens once both requirements are met?

Hospitals that successfully meet both participation and reporting requirements receive a participation letter documenting engagement with WisPQC and participation in patient safety bundle implementation activities that support CMS Birthing Friendly Designation measures.

Is participation limited to certain hospital types?

No. WisPQC works with birthing hospitals and children’s hospitals across Wisconsin, including rural, community, and larger health systems. Support and participation opportunities are designed to meet hospitals where they are in their quality improvement journey.
